Update, Information & Comments

10 November 2005

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDANT OF
THE MARINE CORPS
On November 10th, 1775, the Second
continental congress resolved to raise two
battalions of Continental Marines marking the
birth of our United States Marine Corps. As Major
General Lejeune's message reminds us, the
ensuing generations of Marines would come to
signify all that is highest in warfighting excellence
and military virtue. Each November as Marines
world over celebrate the birth of our Corps, we
pay tribute to that long line of "Soldiers of the
Sea" and illustrious legacy they have handed
down to us.

This past year has been one of continuous
combat operations overseas and distinguished
service here at home - a year of challenges that
have brought out the very best in our Corps. In
Iraq and Afghanistan, Marine courage and mastery
of complex and chaotic environments have truly
made a difference in the lives of millions. Marine
compassion and flexibility provided humanitarian
assistance to thousands in the wake of the South
East Asian Tsunami, and here at home, Marines
with AAVs, helicopters, and sometimes with their
bare hands saved hundreds of our own fellow
Americans in the wake of Hurricanes Katrine and
Rita. Across the full spectrum of operations, you
have showcased that Marines
create stability in an
unstable world,
and have reinforced our Corps'
reputation for setting the standard of excellence.

The sense of honor, courage, and patriotism
that epitomized those who answered that first call
to arms two hundred and thirty years ago is still
indelibly imprinted on our ranks today. In
commemorating our anniversary, let us
strengthen our ties to the past by paying homage
to those who have gone before us. As we honor
the sacrifices of our wounded and fallen
comrades, our commitment to one another
remains unshakable. We take special pride in the
actions of the Marines now serving in harm's way,
and rededicate ourselves the service of our
Nation and our Corps.

Happy Birthday Marines, Semper Fidelis, and
Keep Attacking!

6, As most of know by now, the cost of mailing will be
increased an additIonal 2 cents per letter at the
beginning of the new year. I have enclosed a
membership aplication for our Marine non-members,
which have been receiving the newsletter for
sometime now. It will be necessary to reduce our
mailing costs substantially, and look forward to
welcoming these Marines as members of our
Detachment or Auxiliary Unit. To come on board as a
member, please make a check payable to the Lt.
Serge B. Simmons Detachmet #1159 for the amount
of $25.00 Mail it to Detachment's P.O. Box 9075,
Ogden, UT 84409-9075.

7. Our Marine John Miles, who was originally hospitalized at
the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center, then transferred
to the South Davis Community Hospital in Bountiful, then
returned to the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Cener, and
recently returned to the South Davis Community Hospital is
recovering very slowily, but nicely. Recently, he was issued
a wheel chair, plus a ram was insalled leading into the front
door of this house, its likely he will be receiving a motorized
chair, because our Chaplain John Estrada is checking
around for a haitch to be placed on the family vehicle in
order to hook up a rig for the motorized chair. I suspect we
could surmise, these events as being his prognosis for the
forseeable future.

8. OUr Department will be having its 2nd Quarterly Meeting
on Saturday, 3 December, at the Golden COrrel
Restaurant, 665 E. Fort Union Blvd, Midvale. This will be an
0800 breakfast gathering. The Department Commandant
has extended a cordial invitation to all Marines and their
adult family members. This sesion will cover the
infrastructure of the Marine Corps League, and how to
enhance the Detachments' and Units' membership. This
type of program has been requested by a number of our
members.

9. If any of our readers wiould like to help defray our
mailing expenses by advertising in our newsletters, I would
be open to any suggestions at this time. At the moment I
mail approximately 230 newsletters each month, and have
been deleting a few each month to keep the cost down. In
the past, as I gained two or three new names each week, I
normally remove 2 or 3 non-members who have been on
the list for over a year.  If interested call me at (801)
281-6101 - evenings.

10. Have a happy 230th Marine Corps Birthday.
