January 2K6 Update, Information & Comments |

6. A reminder, since the postage increase is official the 8th of January, the newsletter will be mailed before that date. After the increase is in lace, it'll be prudent to remove a number of our extended non-members from the mailing list, unless they would like to assist in the mailing expenses. 7. For those of us who are not aware of the Sgt. Grit newsletter on the Internet, you might give it a try. It has a lot of email letters from the younger generation Marines, and their loved ones. Their comments just might rekindle some of the old esprit de corps that we all had at one time - why not give it a try. 8. Reminder: Come this June, our Department will be in the need of an Adjutant/Paymaster. Dick Frary has all of the particulars for this office. You may call him at (801) 278-6949 if you are interested. 9. Comment: If we are asked to, "Remember the Alamo," then shouldn't we "Remember the Bonus March of 1932?" 10. Recently, I paid a visit to the SLC Library, and now have a news clipping for the 21st Marine Rifle Company being activated (11.11.53) as a reserve component here in Salt Lake City. 11. I've been attempting to gather information on Marine Corps Reserve units here in the state of Utah, this data will be placed in the Fort Douglas Military Museum library for future researchers. Would any of our readers have any information pertaining to when the 45th Rifle Company came into existence. At the moment, I am to understand it was situated in Ogden. 12. Also, from talking to some of our senior Marines at the VA Med Ctr we had a Tank unit (SLC) and Engineer unit (Ogden) for building bridges shortly after WWII, and was then mobilized for the Korean conflict. Could any of our readers pass on specifics for these or any other Marine Reserve units that were here in Utah. If so, please call (801) 286-6101. 13. Don't forget, "Be our Messenger," If someone you knw is interested in volunteering, have them call (801) 584-1241 @ the George E. Wahlen VA Med Ctr. |

1. T4Ts - 2K5's Christmas efforts from all appearances was a huge success. Our Coordinator in the Ogden area, Christ Knowlden will be crunching numbers for his report to Toys for Tots Foundation, and we should have a report on those numbers in next month's newsletter. 2. From my prospective, the only down side I witnessed was, a lack of our member's participation. If those who could, would have given at least 2 or 3 hours of their time, it would have helped significantly. Because of the lack of our involvement, Chris and Heather's time and efforts were put to the test. Although this was our first time taking on this formidable responsibility, the upside is, we gained valuable knowledge, and a few of our young new members benefit from the new experience, and are looking forward tot next year's involvement. 3. At-ta-Boy/Girl chits go out to our new Senior Vice Commandant Jeff Sage, and his Scout troop, along with the PFC James Jay Williams Unit #445, MCLA. Also, Chris had a helping hand from a mbmer of the Utah Headquarters Detachment #1215, who resides in Rock Springs, WY. Marine Lou Dale took care of business there by passing on the collected toys to needy families via the American Legion Post in Rock Springs. 4. This month, Betty and I decided to forego the trip to the Quin Conference being held in Albuquerque, NM and use our expected expenses elsewhere. Instead we will be traveling to the San Diego area to visit the Balboa Naval Hospital. Advance arrangements have been made to visit our young WIA Marines that have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. We will be taking with us a sum of financial assistance to bring some enjoyment to their everyday recovery period. We hope to return with a much broader insight, and ideas how we can better serve our young WIA Marines in the San Diego area. In other words, we need to ratchet up our efforts by walking our talk in a more pronounced way - Once a Marine, always a Marine. In my view, we need to go well beyond just displaying a yellow ribbon on a vehicle. 5. In addition, our Detachment/Department Chaplain John Estrada has suggested, and authorized funding from the Puppy Scratch Relief Fund to be used in assisting these young Marines. Also, its likely we will be visiting the Marines at Camp Pendleton Hospital. Look for a report on this expedition in next month's newsletter. |
