December 2005

Update, Information & Comments

1. This month's Detachment meeting will be held at the American Legion Post #134, 345 South Depot Street, Clearfield - 1900, 21 December.

2. For all Marines and family members reading this newsletter, who would like to assist our Detachment in the Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Foundation Program, by sharing a few hours of your time packing bags of toys for needy families at the Catholic Community Services Center, 2504 F. Avenue, Ogden.  We need help from December 18 thru the 21st (Sunday to Wednesday) - from 1200 to 1400.  Up to this juncture, our Coordinator and his wife Heather has carried the complete load on their shoulders in making the Program work for the Detachment's first year taking on this responsibility, so the community's needy family's children will be able to have the same kind of Christmas other children come to expect.  Needless to say, the response to our plead for 2 or 3 hours of our reader's time has been deafening to say the least-really it's mind boggling.  If anyone could spare 2 or 3 hours please call Chris or Heather at 399-3842 or 390-7778.

3. If we have any stamp collectors on our mailing list, a few of us should of noticed, that last month's mailing was post marked 10 November, with a Marine Corps commemorative stamp which went on sale officially in Washington D.C. on that date.  Perhaps, some day it will be a Marines collectors item in the future.

4. Our Department had its 2nd Quarterly Meeting Saturday, 3 December.  We were able to vote on accepting the Department's Administrative Procedures.  Plus we were pleasantly surprised by the attendance of the Rocky Mountain Division Vice Commandant, who drove in from Colorado.  Pete Woods took the time and effort and chance the nasty weather to be here with us, and we appreciate and thank him for his courtesy towards Utah.  An overly intense presentation was given on the Marine Corps League infrastructure, plus tips on how to locate Marines for membership - like the more than 150 non-member Marines presently on our mailing list.  I don't think we'll need a presentation like that   for a good while.

5. The Department of Utah, will hae the pleasure of hosting the Annual Rocky Mountain Division Conference on Saturday, July 21st.  More on this in future newsletters.  This conference included - CO, NM, UT & WY.

6. The Rocky Mountain Division will be hosting the Quin Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico on January 19, 20, 21, 2K6.  If anyone would like particulars on it, please call the Department Commandant evenings at (801) 281-8101.

7. Marine Dick Frary, our Department Adjutant/Paymaster has asked me to put the word out, that he will be relinquishing his present position at our Department Convention this coming June.  It there are any members who may be interested in being the Department Adjutant/Paymaster, please be in touch with marine Frary.  He will fill you in on the particulars & responsibilities for this position.

8. Recently, I have spoken with the Commanding Officer of RS, SLC and he asked me to inquire among our newsletter readers, if we know of any Marine who has recently returned from Iraq or Afghanistan.  The Marines are looking for a hometown "Community Hero" for the purpose of a billboard display - preferably a Sergeant or below.  If any of us know of such a Marine, please call the RS, SLC at 954-0402 or myself at 281-6101.

9. Our Marine Miles from Layton, who is still recovering from the Guillian - Barre syndrome is still making a nice progress.  The Lt. Serge B. Simmons Detachment #1159 recently aided Marine Miles by having a hitch attached to his car, the VA supplied the lifting carriage and motorized chair.  Another Marine has entered the picture by donating a nice sum of aluminum to assist us in that endeavor.  Marine Jay Sant, is the President of Intermountain Mobility, Inc. - For People On The Move.  Jay deals in automotive adaptions for the physically challenged which covers hand controls, raised tops, wheelchair lifts, scooter lifts and lowered floors.  This includes all makes and models, he may be reached at (801) 913-2525.  It comes down to, "Marines helping Marines."

10. Once again, beginning next month because of the postage increase a number of our longevity non-members will not be receiving our letter.  But will be most welcome to come on board as a member if so desired.

11. Enjoy the enclosed book marker from the Marine Corps Museum.

12. If we remember 9/11, why not remember the Bonus March of 1932.
