August 2005

Update, Information & Comments

1. Please note!  Saturday, 27 August (1100 hours to ?) will be our first picnic, all Marines and their families receiving this newsletter are welcome to participate.  This picnic is slated as a moneymaker for both the Detachment and Auxiliary Unit in Ogden.  Cost is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children.  The picnic will be held a the American Legion Post in Clearfield.  Directions to the Post are as follows: From I-15, take exit 336, at the end of the ramp turn West on 700 South.  Go to State Street, turn right & go to 200 South (traffic light), then turn left again and go to the railroad tracks & turn left once again, and the Post will be on your left side approximately 100 yards.

Bring your folding chairs for our comfort or enjoy the lush green grass.

2. Our Chaplain, John Estrada, and his wife Gloria paid a visit to our Marine at the South Davis Community Hospital, and once again the Detachment was able to pass on some additional financial assistance to his family.  Also, he is able to communicate verbally.  he tells us, that it's very likely he will be returning to the George E. Wahlen VA Med Ctr. soon to continue his rehabilitation back to some type of normalcy.  Because of our Chaplain's ongoing efforts in collecting aluminum cans to recycle into cash, the Detachment's relief fund is still able to assist him in meeting his monthly obligations, in spite of the meager assistance received from the Social Security disability program.  Utility company's claim, they cannot offer any assistance for his utility bills, because he receives two hundred dollars over their guide lines from Social Security.

3.  We are planning the Charter Presentation for the Utah Headquarters Detachment for Saturday, 17 September at the Golden Corral Restaurant, 700 East and a7200 South.  We will begin immediately after having breakfast at 0800.  There will be additional information in September's newsletter.  We have 25 members on board now, and it looks as if we will have a few more Marines on board before then.  this Detachment is growing in numbers by the day.

4. Recently, I received a phone call from Sgt. Weeks of the Marine Corps Reserves.  Once again, Charlie company is extending an invitation to the Marine Community to attend their Marine Corps Birthday Ball 2005.  It will be held at the Hilton Hotel, 255 S. West Temple, Salt Lake City.  Cocktail hour will be at 1800, and the ceremony will take place at 1900 hours.  The cost will be approximately $40.00 (Subject to change at a later date if need be).  Food will be, chicken or beef.  Additional information will be forthcoming at a later date.  A firm date will also be forthcoming.

5. Ben Lomond High School asked for our support in helping their Athletic Club, by sponsoring a sign on their ball field.  If any Marine would like to send in a few dollars in order for us to get our sign posted on their school grounds, it would greatly be appreciated and needs about $200.00 for this project.  Jay Knowlden our Jr. Past commandant is spearheading this project.  Any donation can he forwarded to our address on our newsletter heading.

6. I am in receipt of the Marine Corps League Magazine for this quarter, if you have not received yours please be in touch.  Please don't discard them as I can use them for the Marine patients at the George E. Walden VA Med Ctr.

7. Also, this month's feature pertains to the Marines at Khe Sanh. For those Marines interested, the Fort Douglas Military Museum can order the Osprey publication entitled Khe Sanh.  I will have a selection of Marine Corps Osprey publications that can be ordered thru the Fort Douglas Military Museum on the 17th of September.

8. Again, I would like to remind everyone about our picnic Saturday, 27 August from 1100 til ???.  Hope to see you there.

 Semper Fi!
